The summer of 2013 has had more blockbusters underwhelm critics and moviegoers than usual. After a strong start (“Iron Man 3,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”), its been a long slog through such bombs as “After Earth,” “White House Down,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Pacific Rim” and, last week, “R.I.P.D.” None of which made enough money at the U.S. box office to validate their existence.
