North Korea claims it tested first intercontinental missile

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea on Tuesday claimed it successfully test-launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile, a potential game-changing development in what may be the world's most dangerous nuclear standoff and, if true, a direct rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump's earlier declaration that such a test "won't happen!" The launch appeared to be North Korea's most successful missile test yet. A U.S. scientist examining the height and distance said the missile could potentially be powerful enough to reach Alaska. In typically heated rhetoric, North Korea's Academy of Defense Science said the test of an ICBM -- the Hwasong-14 -- marked the "final step" in creating a "confident and powerful nuclear state that can strike anywhere on Earth." It will be difficult to confirm many details about what happened. North Korea's weapons program is perhaps the most closely held state secret in one of the world's most suspicious nations. U.S., South Korean and Japanese officials earlier assessed that the North fired an intermediate-range missile into waters near Japan. Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga declined to comment on whether Japan thinks it was an ICBM, and South Korea's Defense Ministry said it was analyzing whether the North's statement was accurate. North Korea has previously launched satellites in what critics said were disguised tests of its long-range missile technology. A test-launch of an ICBM, however, would be a major step in developing nuclear-armed missiles that could reach anywhere in the United States. The launch sends a political warning to Washington and its chief Asian allies, Seoul and Tokyo, while also allowing North Korean scientists a chance to perfect their still-incomplete nuclear missile program. It came on the eve of the U.S. Independence Day holiday, days after the first face-to-face meeting of the leaders of South Korea and the United States, and ahead of a global summit of the world's richest economies. Most outside and North Korean analyses of the missile's height, distance and time in the air were roughly similar. U.S., South Korean and Japanese officials say it flew for about 40 minutes and reached an altitude of 2,500 kilometers (1,500 miles), which would be longer and higher than any similar North Korean test previously reported. It also covered a distance of about 930 kilometers (580 miles). North Korea said the missile flew as high as 2,802 kilometers before hitting a designated target in the ocean about 933 kilometers away from the launch site in the North's northwest. It said the missile flew for about 39 minutes and was made at the highest possible angle. Russia's military, however, said the missile flew considerably shorter and lower than others reported. Before North Korea's announcement of an ICBM, South Korean analysts said it was likely that it was a retest of one of two intermediate-range missiles launched earlier this year. One U.S. missile scientist, David Wright, estimated that the highly lofted missile, if the reported time and distance are correct, could have a possible maximum range of 6,700 kilometers (4,160 miles), which could put Alaska in its range, if fired at a normal trajectory. Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former commanding officer of the British Armed Forces Joint Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear Regiment, said that "in capability of missile terms and delivery, it is a major step up and they seem to be making progress week-on-week." He added, however, that "actually marrying the warhead to the missile is probably the biggest challenge, which they appear not to have progressed on." North Korea has a reliable arsenal of shorter-range missiles and is thought to have a small arsenal of atomic bombs, but is still trying to perfect its longer-range missiles. Some outside civilian experts believe the North has the technology to mount warheads on shorter-range Rodong and Scud missiles that can strike South Korea and Japan, two key U.S. allies where about 80,000 American troops are stationed. But it's unclear if it has mastered the technology needed to build an atomic bomb that can fit on a long-range missile. Soon after the morning launch, President Trump responded on Twitter: "North Korea has just launched another missile. Does this guy have anything better to do with his life? Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!""This guy" presumably refers to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. China is North Korea's economic lifeline and only major ally, and the Trump administration is pushing Beijing to do more to push the North toward disarmament. After North Korea claimed earlier this year it was close to an ICBM test launch, Trump took to Twitter and said, "It won't happen!" In Beijing, China's foreign ministry urged North Korea on Tuesday "to stop taking actions that violate United Nations Security Council resolutions.""We hope all relevant parties can exercise restraint, ease tensions on the peninsula as soon as possible, and bring the peninsular issue back to the correct track of peace talks and consultation," ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a regular briefing. The missile test could invite a new round of international sanctions, but North Korea is already one of the most sanctioned countries on Earth. U.N. Security Council resolutions ban it from engaging in any ballistic activities. Since late 2012, North Korea has placed two satellites into orbit with long-range rockets, each time triggering new U.N. sanctions and worldwide condemnation. Last year, North Korea conducted its fourth and fifth atomic bomb tests and claimed a series of technical breakthroughs in its efforts to develop long-range nuclear missiles. The fifth nuclear test in September was the North's most powerful atomic detonation to date. In their meeting last week, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Trump vowed to oppose North Korea's development of atomic weapons. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sharply criticized North Korea for the launch. "The latest launch clearly showed that the threat is growing," Abe said. Abe, who talked by phone with Trump on Monday, said the two leaders plan to seek cooperation from world leaders when they attend a G-20 summit in Germany. On May 14, North Korea launched a Hwasong-12 missile which its state media said flew as high as 2,111 kilometers (1,310 miles) and landed in a targeted area in the ocean about 787 kilometers (490 miles) from the launch site. On May 21, North Korea tested a Pukguksong-2, which traveled about 500 kilometers (310 miles). The Korean Peninsula has been divided since before the 1950-53 Korean War. Almost 30,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea. Since taking office on May 10, Moon has tried to improve strained ties with North Korea, but the North has continued its missile tests. North Korea says it needs nuclear weapons and powerful missiles to cope with what it calls rising U.S. military threats. Since taking office after his dictator father Kim Jong Il's death in late 2011, Kim Jong Un has overseen three nuclear weapons tests and a slew of missile tests. Regional disarmament talks on North Korea's nuclear program have been deadlocked since 2009, when the North pulled out of the negotiations to protest international condemnation over a long-range rocket launch. Global Warming Alarmism Goes To '11': Stephen Hawking Claims Trump Could Turn Earth Into Venus

Authored by Daniel Lang via SHTFplan.com,

*Proponents of man-made global warming have a habit of making frightening predictions that never come true.* Every ten years or so, they tells us that within a decade the human race will have destroyed the planet with our carbon emitting vehicles and power plants. They say the same thing every time. The seas will rise several feet, atmospheric temperatures will skyrocket, ecosystems will be obliterated, and human civilization will collapse. *And after ten years passes by without incident, they shamelessly make their next prediction.*

*The latest prediction is perhaps the most outlandish, and it comes from a source that you might not expect.*

Famed physicist Stephen Hawking spent part of his 75th birthday celebration warning the public of the potentially catastrophic consequences of US president Donald Trump’s climate change policy.

*“We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible,” *he said yesterday (July 2) in an interview with BBC News. *“Trump’s action could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid.”*

Hawking, who directs research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge, UK, said climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and rebuked Trump for obfuscating its existence and withdrawing the US from the Paris Accords.

“By denying the evidence for climate change, and pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, Donald Trump will cause avoidable environmental damage to our beautiful planet, endangering the natural world, for us and our children,” he said.

*That is perhaps the most outlandish global warming prediction that has ever been made by any scientist. How such an otherwise intelligent man could say that is mind boggling.*

*For starters, there isn’t any evidence that the Paris Agreement would actually have a significant effect on the climate. *But that’s a forgivable mistake. There are plenty of highly educated people who take that accord seriously, despite the evidence that suggests it’s at best useless, and at worse it could decimate the American economy. But at least there’s an argument to be made on both sides.

*What’s absolutely unforgivable, is Hawking’s claim that humans could damage the earth’s atmosphere so much through carbon emissions, that it would resemble the lifeless atmosphere of Venus.* To give you an idea of how asinine that idea is, the current level of CO2 in the atmosphere is over 400 ppm. 250 million years ago, when dinosaurs roamed the earth and life on this planet was likely just as abundant and diverse as it is now, that level was 5 times higher. 250 million years before that, it was at 7,000 ppm, and the average temperature at that time wasn’t over a hundred degrees hotter. It wasn’t even close to what we see on Venus.

*It’s probably not even possible for human’s to put that much CO2 in the atmosphere. *The most liberal estimates suggest that the atmosphere would contain CO2 at a level of 5,000 ppm if we burned through every fossil fuel source on the planet, and that’s not likely. But again, even if we did that, our planet would not resemble the surface of Venus.

*There’s only two reasonable explanations for this bizarre prediction.* Either Hawking’s brilliant mind is going senile, or he’s pushing alarmist claims in the hopes that it will scare us all into supporting climate change initiatives that he thinks will save our planet. Whatever the case may be, this man’s commentary outside of physics shouldn’t ever be taken seriously. Reported by Zero Hedge 10 hours ago.

A 4th Of July Remembrance: Independence Arises From Self-Reliance

Authored by Charles Hugh Smith via OfTwoMinds blog,

Individualism, it seems, means not the making of one's own way but the demanding of sacrifices by others to maintain one's own lifestyle.

*What is visible on July 4th is the overwhelming consumerism of an American holiday:* the over-hyped sales campaigns, the over-indulgences of the table, and the obligatory displays of fireworks.* But beneath this celebratory surface run questions about American identity and the state of grace of the American soul.*

*There is a darkness in that soul, the poisonous darkness of greed, complacency and hubris. Individualism, it seems, means not the making of one's own way but the demanding of sacrifices by others to maintain one's own lifestyle:* the sacrifices laid on the next generations to pay our lavish medical and retirement benefits, and the sacrificing of the planet to supply us with cheap energy, particle-board furniture and all the other gimcracks which are piled up in countless garages and storage facilities across the overstuffed suburbs of America.

There is another American soul, a largely forgotten one; that of Emerson, Thoreau and Muir. Emerson's essay Self-Reliance speaks to a radical individualism: *"Insist on yourself; never imitate."*

His vision has been reduced to a callow "do your own thing," but his individualism is not the type trumpeted by consumerism, of dependence on the state and all the ills of self-absorption. It is both spiritual (Emerson was a Harvard-trained minister, after all) and a state of being.

*"Man is not a farmer, a professor or an engineer, but he is all."* To be fluid, capable of metamorphosis, and true to oneself was not an abstract ideal to study in a classroom but a way of living: *"We live amid surfaces, and the true art of life is to skate well on them."*

At 68 years of age, Emerson passed this understanding to a 33-year old living in Yosemite Valley, John Muir. Though Emerson's visit was brief, it clearly affected Muir for the remainder of his life. Here is his account of their time together:

"Yes, the most of my years were spent on the wild side of the continent, invisible, in the forests and mountains. These men were the first to find me and hail me as a brother. First of all, and greatest of all, came Emerson. I was then living in Yosemite Valley as a convenient and grand vestibule of the Sierra from which I could make excursions into the adjacent mountains. I had not much money and was then running a mill that I had built to saw fallen timber for cottages.

When he came into the Valley I heard the hotel people saying with solemn emphasis, "Emerson is here." I was excited as I had never been excited before, and my heart throbbed as if an angel direct from heaven had alighted on the Sierran rocks. But so great was my awe and reverence, I did not dare to go to him or speak to him. I hovered on the outside of the crowd of people that were pressing forward to be introduced to him and shaking hands with him. Then I heard that in three or four days he was going away, and in the course of sheer desperation I wrote him a note and carried it to his hotel telling him that E1 Capitan and Tissiack demanded him to stay longer.

The next day he inquired for the writer and was directed to the little sawmill. He came to the mill on horseback attended by Mr. Thayer [James Bradley Thayer, a member of Emerson's party, who, in 1884, published a little volume of reminiscences under the title of A Western Journey with Mr. Emerson] and inquired for me. I stepped out and said, "I am Mr. Muir.""Then Mr. Muir must have brought his own letter," said Mr. Thayer and Emerson said, "Why did you not make yourself known last evening? I should have been very glad to have seen you." Then he dismounted and came into the mill. I had a study attached to the gable of the mill, overhanging the stream, into which I invited him, but it was not easy of access, being reached only by a series of sloping planks roughened by slats like a hen ladder; but he bravely climbed up and I showed him my collection of plants and sketches drawn from the surrounding mountains which seemed to interest him greatly, and he asked many questions, pumping unconscionably.

He came again and again, and I saw him every day while he remained in the valley, and on leaving I was invited to accompany him as far as the Mariposa Grove of Big Trees. I said, "I'll go, Mr. Emerson, if you will promise to camp with me in the Grove. I'll build a glorious campfire, and the great brown boles of the giant Sequoias will be most impressively lighted up, and the night will be glorious." At this he became enthusiastic like a boy, his sweet perennial smile became still deeper and sweeter, and he said, "Yes, yes, we will camp out, camp out"; and so next day we left Yosemite and rode twenty five miles through the Sierra forests, the noblest on the face of the earth, and he kept me talking all the time, but said little himself. The colossal silver firs, Douglas spruce, Libocedrus and sugar pine, the kings and priests of the conifers of the earth, filled him with awe and delight."

A justly famous Emerson quote speaks to the core of self-reliance and the agency of true independence: *"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."* Reported by Zero Hedge 7 hours ago.

Alpine A110 first ride: will it be a Porsche 718 Cayman beater?

$

Alpine’s bold intention for its new A110 is to create a lightweight sports car to rival the Porsche 718 Cayman on track while remaining comfortable every day on the road

We’ve seen the Alpine A110 production car – the model that revives the famous Alpine name – on the show stand at Geneva and we’ve learnt all about its technical specifications, but we won’t actually drive the car until October. However, I have just spent a day riding in it at Renault’s Aubevoye test facility in the north of France.

Before I was allowed to belt myself into the A110’s fixed-back bucket seat, Chief Engineer David Twohig and Product Planning Director Eric Reymann took a few minutes to set the scene. "We started doing some customer clinics as far back as 2012," says Reymann, "first with pure car guys, people who owned specific Porsches, Caterhams or Lotuses, and then with everybody else. We found there was an appetite for a sports car that could be comfortable to use every day, but that was also fun on the circuit."

*Alpine A110 makes Goodwood Festival of Speed dynamic debut*

"We wanted to build a car that was a pleasure to drive on the road at 40mph," adds Twohig, "but still bloody good when you go and do a track day every couple of months." From there, Twohig and his team defined the A110’s technical specifications, placing lightness front and centre.

"If the car is light,’ he continues, "that allows you to bring the spring rates down, so you don’t have a super stiff car that’s a pain to drive every day. That’s why the A110’s body is made from aluminium.

"The second important thing is the suspension set-up. We’ve got double wishbones all-round, which is very unusual in this class. The 718 Cayman, for instance, has MacPherson struts on its front axle."

It’s worth revisiting chapter one of the vehicle dynamics textbook here, because those double wishbones, as well as the lightweight build, really do underpin every one of the A110’s dynamic characteristics. Double wishbones allow the engineers to control wheel camber in hard cornering, whereas a less sophisticated strut arrangement does not. By controlling wheel camber, you’re keeping the tyre contact patch flat to the road surface, rather than allowing it to ‘fall over’ into positive camber, where it can’t grip effectively.

In a car with strut suspension, that can be achieved by fitting whacking great anti-roll bars to stop the body from leaning over in a bend. But that simply ruins the ride quality.

"Because we have double wishbones all-round," explains Twohig, "we don’t have to fight against the body roll. That’s why the A110 uses very small, hollow anti-roll bars, which are really good for the ride."

With weight kept to a minimum – just 1080kg at the kerb – and that double wishbone layout, the foundations of a good sports car are in place. The A110 should be agile and grippy (even on its relatively modest Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres), with a pliant ride quality and good body control. Everything else should simply follow along from there.

Let’s dive a little deeper. The A110’s suspension arrangement, says Twohig, gives it best in class camber linearity. That makes it progressive at the limit rather than spiky and unpredictable. Furthermore, in really hard cornering, the toe angle adjusts to slight toe-out, which gives gentle understeer characteristics, meaning there’s a safety margin built in. The basic chassis balance can therefore be tuned to be quite neutral, or even oversteery. All of that makes for a car that’s fun and adjustable at low and medium speeds, while also being stable and secure at high speeds. We call that the Holy Grail.

It’s worth noting, though, that double wishbone suspension isn’t without its drawbacks, mostly relating to packaging. A strut arrangement would have enabled a bigger front storage compartment. It’s encouraging to know Alpine’s priorities are as they should be.

There aren’t many people on this earth better equipped to demonstrate the A110’s dynamic ability than Laurent Hurgon, and there can’t be many better places to experience the car right on the limit than Aubevoye’s high-speed test track. Hurgon, the French racing and development driver, pilots the A110 with such commitment and ability around the flowing track – which links terrifyingly fast bends with tight, complex corners – that I can hardly believe I’m riding in a car so dainty and benign looking. This thing feels like a wild animal.

Straight-line performance is strong and there’s even an authentic sports car soundtrack to go with it, while the double-clutch gearshifts feel sharp and snappy. The Track ESC mode allows a certain amount of slip – enough that the car will drift slightly in low-speed corners but not beyond that – and with the systems switched off entirely, the car will hold long, lurid and very progressive slides. It also feels amazingly agile and responsive in direction changes while being safe and stable at high speed.

Over rougher sections of the test facility – by which I mean surfaces that would cause many cars to leap clean over the perimeter fence – that pliant ride quality is very plain to see. I don’t know of many cars that combine body control and ride quality as well as this.

Does any of that actually make the A110 fun to drive? We won’t know until we drive the car later in the year. I am now more confident than ever, though, that the Alpine will have what it takes to give the mighty Porsche 718 Cayman an equally mighty scare.

The Heart of Park of America, The Soul of America Building, to Unite the Nation and focus on Employing Veterans

Park of America’s goal for the construction of this state-of-the-art monument, will turn Science Fiction into Science Fact. Leaving your mark in history by literally allowing each American to speak to their future generations, in sight and sound, forever.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) July 05, 2017

Park of America (POA) is anticipated to open by 2026, in time for the nation's celebration of 250 years of independence. Recently announcing the plans for the construction of the world's largest flag - a display of the Stars and Stripes which will span Flag Mountain - Terrance W. Sachetti, Founder & CEO, is also promoting his plans for the Soul of America. Through its founding, construction, and operation, he envisions large and permanent growth of employment and the economy, but his vision is bigger – the uniting of the nation and the reignition of the American Dream.

The 500-foot wide, star-shaped building promises to be an impressive structure, with five stories of blue glass emerging from the earth, but the Soul of America is named for what will be contained in its massive server, two stories beneath it. This will be a cutting-edge concept for a monument. The Soul of America will be a depository, allowing Americans to make their mark in history, by creating and uploading their own, living life-journal. Finally, every American gets to go down in history and exercise control over how they are represented in this historical record. Citizens will be invited to preserve video, audio, pictures, and writings for posterity. Sachetti elaborated, "Imagine a living family tree for all Americans. You can preserve the wisdom of your grandmother, and leave videos with encouragement and jokes for your great grandchildren." The secure storage will act as a continuous record of our country and its people, prompting Terrance to call it My American Life Journal.

He believes "We, as Americans, are the indispensable cogs, responsible for the perseverance and growth of this great nation. We are the unsung heroes, and this is meant to be a true memorial for the people and by the people." Park of America is a non-profit organization, and will focus on employing veterans. The goal of the construction and operation of the POA is expressed in the mission statement on the website; “To make America united again, by inspiring patriotism, national unity & promoting America’s core values.”

Regarding the enormity of the project, Sachetti smiled, “Maybe President Trump could connect me with a few good people & or a good project manager.” One aspect of the park’s design is a scale model of the United States. Visitors will be able to walk through the 3200-foot topographical map, complete with representations of natural and man-made attractions from each state.

Several other plans round out the park. The World Tour Lake will be a world map which is navigable by boat and land, complete with every country and capital city. A full sized White House will enable open access to a replica of the iconic structure many would, otherwise, not get to visit. Performers throughout the park will reenact scenes of the country’s founding and other history. Sachetti wants it “… to be like you are transported through time, seeing the forefathers walking through the park, hearing their insight, and witnessing their contributions to the birth of our nation.”

The design of Flag Mountain, the structure which will bear the world’s largest flag, includes an indoor theme park, ski slope, eateries, and shops, organized to represent climates and cultures of different regions of the United States. The arrangement of the entertainment and educational aspects of the park will have been separated so that it maintains the serene environment of the outer park, while hosting an exciting theme park within the mountain.

A site-selection search is to be launched soon to find an ideal, southern location for the POA. It is expected that some southern states will compete to have Park of America located in their state. It is anticipated to create thousands of construction and permanent jobs for the host state, as well as generate increased tourism revenue. Terrance is currently searching for corporate sponsors, spokespersons, volunteers, and professionals for the non-profit organization.

If you are interested in this historic campaign, you can go to http://www.ParkOfAmerica.com. Here you can view a 3D flythrough of the park, donate, sign-up to volunteer, and learn more about the project. Reported by PRWeb 1 day ago.

#G20 Dabble in Taking Half a Quadrillion from Taxpayers Replete with Failure of Analysis of Climate Change Data by Bank of England, says Friends of Science

The TaskForce on Climate Related Disclosures (TFCD) report, released just in time for the G20 summit, is based on faulty analysis of climate change data, risk, and uncertainties by a Bank of England official, says Friends of Science Society. According to plans of a previous G20 Finance Ministers’ summit of Feb. 20, 2016, their plan to ‘go green’ would ultimately take half a quadrillion dollars from taxpayers, despite the fact that wind and solar do not reduce carbon dioxide emissions and cannot replace conventional power.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (PRWEB) July 05, 2017

As reported in the New York Times of June 29, 2017, the TaskForce on Climate Related Disclosures (TFCD) report was released just in time for the G20 summit, but it is based on faulty analysis of climate change data by Bank of England governor, Mark Carney, says Friends of Science Society. They refer to an Oct. 10, 2015 fact-check by Steve Kopitz on Princeton Energy Advisors' blog of Carney’s much cited Lloyds of London speech. Kopitz called Carney’s catastrophic claims a “failure of analysis.”

As noted by James Delingpole in The Spectator of July 1, 2017, the Bank of England has a fiduciary obligation to assess all risks, such as the risk of investing in businesses like renewables, which are only viable thanks to massive taxpayer subsidies.

In February of 2017, Friends of Science Society issued two reports highly critical of pension funds and institutional investors basing their climate change ‘risk’ obsession on hyperbolic, out-dated climate data and the ineffective COP-21 #ParisAgreement.

The TaskForce claims there is an alleged “climate risk” of holding various fossil fuels assets which may become ‘stranded’ – unable to be exploited – and thus valueless, if society moves to a ‘low-carbon economy.’ This seems unlikely as the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that the world's energy is supplied by about 80% fossil fuels and only 1.4% by wind and solar. That ratio is not expected to change significantly even by 2050.

As reported by the UNEP on Feb. 27, 2016, the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in Shanghai, planned $90 trillion dollars for ‘green.’ Extrapolating these plans, Ottawa energy policy consultant, Robert Lyman, showed that the G20 ultimately would take half a quadrillion dollars from taxpayers, illustrated in Friends of Science YouTube clip "I'm in the Red and So are You."

Peer-reviewed papers like that of Prof. M.J. Kelly of Cambridge, published May 23, 2016 in MRS Energy and Sustainability, demonstrate that wind and solar do not reduce carbon dioxide emissions and cannot provide suitable power for a modern society.

Friends of Science Society says the TaskForce document’s elaborate methods of greenhouse gas and climate risk reporting open the door for corporate espionage and geopolitical wrangling. This is contrary to UN Charter Principles of equal national sovereignty.

Further, Friends of Science Society says the participants of the TaskForce appear to be parties which are heavily invested in renewables, carbon markets and ‘Green Bonds” – and they should first publicly disclose any vested interests before they demand that others report on an alleged ‘carbon risk,’ founded on failed analysis of publicly available climate data.

The Stonehenge Watch™ has been named as the “Eclipse Predictor” for “The Great American Eclipse, 2017!” in the June, 2017 American Journal of Physics. This honor was given by Astronomer, Jay M. Cambridge, Massacvhusetts (PRWEB) July 05, 2017

The Makers of The Stonehenge Watch™ are pleased to announce the Stonehenge Watch™ has been named as the “Eclipse Predictor” for “The Great American Eclipse, 2017” in the American Journal of Physics (June, 2017.) This distinction was given by Astronomer, Jay M. Pasachoff, the Chair of The International Astronomical Union Working Group on Solar Eclipses, in his OSE-1 Resource Letter.

The Great American Eclipse, is a total eclipse of the sun, where the rays of the sun will be completely blocked by the moon, and spread a shadow of totality across the entirety of the United States mainland from Oregon to South Carolina. This is an extremely rare event that won’t happen again until 2316!

The 5th millennial edition of the Stonehenge Watch™ is specially crafted to keep the integrity of the original construction of Stonehenge, and thus, when opening the watch case, can use the built-to-scale model of Stonehenge as a shadow clock to tell time, mark the four seasons, predict eclipses, and note the passage of the years. Every astronomical function that was intended by the original builders of Stonehenge can be accomplished with the watch.
By owning The Stonehenge Watch™, users will quickly learn that Stonehenge is, at once, the oldest and newest way to tell time. Begin a "Great Leap Backward in Time" by pressing the watch stem button atop the rugged alloy watchcase and witness the mystery of Stonehenge revealed.
Inside, see the exact scale replica of the major components of the 5,000 year-old megalithic monument known as Stonehenge. Orient yourself with the watch's accompanying compass to tell local apparent time just as the builders of Stonehenge did thousands of years ago.

The Stonehenge Watch™ is the answer to the smart watch. Tired of hipsters strutting around with the latest in wearable technology? Well, buck the trend and go back in time 5,000 years to the most organic method of time telling, a wearable sundial. And while some smart watches are solar powered, The Stonehenge Watch™ is both solar and lunar powered (a proprietary secret.) This eco-friendly watch is not only perfect for the millennials, but for the fifth millennial Cro-Magnums and Neanderthals alike. Can the owner of a smart watch compute an eclipse? Well, probably, but not in the way of our esteemed ancestors, by actually looking at the moon in the sky, aligning your watch, and then howling! The Stonehenge Watch™ is not only backward compatible also forward compatible. And to top it off, it is certified to return fewer then one error every millennial or more.

The limited edition Stonehenge Watch™ is available on the website for $24.95, and in select brick and mortar stores.

The late esteemed astronomer, R.J.C. Atkinson, former Chairman of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales, renowned as The Authority on Stonehenge archaeology, has called The Stonehenge Watch™ a "Handsome and ingenious time-piece."

Catherine Salmons, in The Boston Phoenix has said, "I'm amazed by the cleverness of The Stonehenge Watch, the outrageousness of its humor; it's a three-dimensional Zen conundrum, the ultimate neo-dada gadget."

Ivan Peterson, of Science News Online wrote, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, when comparing The Stonehenge Watch™ to a modern day super accurate atomic clock, "The Stonehenge Watch™ tackles the passage of time in a considerably more contemplative manner."

Peter Payack, the inventor of the Stonehenge Watch™ wrote the humorous yet factual accompanying booklet, Stonehenge Unraveled, which can be downloaded from the website for free. And as a bonus, a personally autographed copy of this book, which R.J.C. Atkinson called "a satisfying and scholarly guide to the unique time-piece," is also available, upon request.

The Stonehenge Watch™ has garnered much international attention and has been featured at The International Sky Art Conference at MIT, on BBC-TV, in Astronomy Magazine, in Stuff/UK's 100 Best Gadgets of All-Time issue, featured in Inc. Magazine, is represented in the classic college textbook, Astronomy: From Earth to the Universe (Saunders), and has even been for sale at the Stonehenge site itself.

An app that allows you to see a doctor in minutes has been backed with $26.1 million Push Doctor, a startup with a platform that allows you to speak to a doctor in minutes via a video call, has raised $26.1 million (£20.2 million) from a cohort of investors.

Push Doctor charges people £20 for a 10 minute consultation via a smartphone app or website. Following the consultation, the patient can then be issued with a prescription, a sick note, or a GP referral.

The capital was raised through a Series B funding round led by venture fund Accelerated Digital Ventures and Draper Esprit. Other venture capital funds that participated in the round include Oxford Capital, Partech Ventures, and Seventure Partners.

Total funding in the Manchester-based startup, which connects patients to a network of thousands of UK qualified GPs, now stands at over $37.5 million (£29 million).

Push Doctor, which competes with the likes of Babylon and Your.MD, said it will use the funding to help it bring new products to market, adding that the first of which will be available later this year.

The company's founder and CEO, Eren Ozagir, added in a statement: "This recent funding round will see us boost our growth in customer numbers and take significant steps in our ambition to become the preferred consumer digital health care brand in the world."

Vishal Gulati, digital health investor at Draper Esprit, added: "People's expectations around how, when and where they access healthcare have evolved.

"Push Doctor is the leading health provider which is addressing growing, unmet patient needs. By putting the patient experience first, the company is changing our relationship with healthcare, lowering the hurdle of access for both immediate needs and chronic, long term conditions. Having known the team for two years now, I am excited to continue working with them to build a product which reshapes patient experiences in the future."

Mark Zuckerberg thinks universal basic income is a 'bipartisan idea' worth exploring in the US

Mark Zuckerberg thinks universal basic income is a 'bipartisan idea' worth exploring in the US Mark Zuckerberg has increasingly become a vocal advocate of universal basic income, the economic system in which all people are given a free paycheck from the government, no questions asked.

While in Alaska as part of his 2017 challenge to see every US state, Zuckerberg called universal basic income a "bipartisan idea" worth exploring for the rest of the country.

In Alaska, a state-owned program called the Permanent Fund Dividend pays citizens a percentage of the state's oil revenue. The fund paid every qualified Alaskan $1,022 in 2016, a reduced amount from the prior year that reflects the state's growing budget deficit and decreasing revenue from oil.

"This is a novel approach to basic income in a few ways," Zuckerberg wrote in a post on his Facebook page Tuesday. "First, it's funded by natural resources rather than raising taxes. Second, it comes from conservative principles of smaller government, rather than progressive principles of a larger safety net. This shows basic income is a bipartisan idea."

The world's fifth richest man also pointed to how Native American reservations in the state pay annual dividends to their landowners as another example of universal basic income working in the US.

Zuckerberg shared his first public endorsement of universal basic income during his Harvard commencement address in May.

"We should have a society that measures progress not just by economic metrics like GDP, but by how many of us have a role we find meaningful," Zuckerberg told the crowd. "We should explore ideas like universal basic income to make sure everyone has a cushion to try new ideas."

The Facebook CEO has sparked speculation that he's planning to run for president with his campaign-like tour of the US. He has denied the rumor.

Filmmakers around the world encouraged to submit works that inspire people to appreciate and care for the ocean by revealing its wonders through independent films. 15th annual celebration of features films about marine life, the ocean, coastal cultures and conservation takes place in San Francisco March 8 – 12, 2018 - http://www.oceanfilmfest.org.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 05, 2017

“How inappropriate to call this planet Earth,” opined legendary author Arthur C. Clarke, “when it is quite clearly ocean.” For 15 years, the International Ocean Film Festival has been bringing back the focus to the 75% of our habitat that is indeed, water. Beginning on July 1, 2017, filmmakers from around the world are now encouraged to submit works that inspire others to a love – and respect – for our briny home. The winning entries will be featured at the Festival’s 15th annual celebration March 8 – 12, 2018. Entry details may be found online at http://www.oceanfilmfest.org.

“Although some would deny it, the threat to our oceans, which means to our planet, is undeniable,” said Ana Blanco, Executive Director for the International Ocean Film Festival. “For 15 years, independent filmmakers from around the world have brought their talents to bear, and their passion, in love for and respect for the oceans. There has never been a time more important for those talents and passions to unite on screen for our audiences, and our world.”

Submissions may include films of all genres – documentaries, narratives, shorts, and animation films of all lengths. Subjects may focus on all oceanographic themes including but not limited to: ocean exploration, wildlife, environmental, conservation, oceanography, seafaring adventures, maritime issues, ocean sports and coastal cultures.

Since its launch in 2004, the San Francisco-based International Ocean Film Festival has attracted thousands of spectators of all ages from around the world, including film enthusiasts, sea athletes, educators, and environmental supporters. Since then, the Festival has presented over 50 films from 15 different countries and featured post-film Q&A sessions with visiting filmmakers, special panel discussions with content experts, and the Annual Free Student Education Program. It was the first event of its kind in North America, inspired by the well-established ocean festival in Toulon, France, which has continued to draw large audiences for more than 40 years.

“Our mission is to inspire people to appreciate and care for the ocean by revealing its wonders through the independent lens,” said Blanco, noting that the Festival is now recognized as the premier venue in North America for ocean-related films. “Our work is made possible by the spirit, passion, and hard work of numerous volunteers and artists dedicated to using film as a medium to increase public awareness of the environmental, social, and cultural importance of marine ecosystems and foster a spirit of ocean stewardship.”

The 15th Annual International Ocean Film Festival will take place March 8 – 12, 2018 at venues around San Francisco. The International Ocean Film Festival is a registered 501(c) 3 non-profit.
