China is considering a plan to build a high-speed passenger railway that would traverse Siberia and the Bering Strait into Alaska, Canada and the rest of the U.S.

If built, it would be the longest railway line in the world, according to the Beijing Times.

In the not-so-distant future passengers would be able to travel more than 200 mph, making the 8,000-mile trip within two days, according to a report from Wang Mengshu, railway expert and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

The biggest challenge for the construction is crossing the Bering Strait – an undersea tunnel at least 125 miles long would have to be dug under some of the coldest water on earth.

The “China-Russia-Canada-America” line would be funded by the Chinese government and built by Chinese contractors, China Topix reported.

It is unclear whether officials in China have consulted Russia, Canada or the U.S. government.

"Right now we're already in discussions," said Wang Mengshu. "Russia has already been thinking about this for many years."
