Earth Advantage (EA), a nonprofit focused on advancing the creation of better buildings, has delivered the inaugural training for Earth Advantage® Remodel Certification. This new certification will allow homeowners to bring existing homes up to high performance standards and gain lasting value, comfort and improved health within their homes.

The Earth Advantage Remodel program was created to offer the option of certifying an existing home. Homes are first evaluated and then a plan is created to eventually bring the home to full certification. EA utilizes a sustainability certification system based on five pillars of high performance building: energy, health, land, materials, and water. A homeowner may choose to certify their home to one or multiple pillars at a time or certify their entire home.
Earth Advantage Remodel was developed with input from an advisory council of respected and influential experts, both those who specialize in building to high performance standards and those who do not. EA held its first sold-out remodeler training June 13, 2013, with a wait list for the next scheduled training. A second training will be held in Bend, Oregon on June 26, 2013 to accommodate central Oregon remodelers. Earth Advantage’s director of residential services, Peter Brown said, “We have had a lot of pent-up demand from remodelers who have been telling us over the years that they have been waiting for a program like this. One thing Earth Advantage excels at is creating a holistic environment to enable the valuation of high performance homes.”
Because Earth Advantage provides certification to homes that may have already been remodeled to meet its standards, homeowners have the opportunity to raise the resale value of their existing home. In addition to providing pathways for existing home certification, Earth Advantage Remodel gives remodelers tools to easily assess homes’ levels of health, comfort, durability and energy efficiency. Whether or not homeowners pursue certification, this gives them information on the home their family lives in, and how this home may be affecting their family’s health, comfort and finances in the long term.
