King River Copper (ASX: KRC) has developed two exploration models to explain high grade copper, gold and silver surface results at Speewah Dome in Western Australia.
These models will be used to direct drilling in May with a new portable diamond core rig arranged for this program.
The Chapman, Catto and Greys prospects are thought to be controlled by the intersection flat dipping sulphidic quartz veins with the target horizons and major sub-vertical faults.
Meanwhile, certain aspects of the geology at Speewah match criteria for the development of an iron oxide copper gold deposit.
This includes evidence of deep ultramafic activity on a regional scale, potassic alteration associated with major structures and mineralisation, and associated minerals containing silver, bismuth and light rare earth elements.
Such bodies often form pipe like bodies of brecciated material with strong hematite / magnetite alteration and associated high grade mineralisation.
Of particular interest is the Chapman deposit where high grade copper (39%) and gold (4 grams per tonne) mineralisation while elevated bismuth and uranium are associated with a hematite breccia on the edge of a circular feature.
*Exploration Program*
King River’s exploration in 2014 has been divided into two phases.
Under the first phase, exploration will target copper-gold-silver mineralisation at specific, shallow, litho-structural positions.
The company will drill 11 diamond holes at Chapman, Catto West, Eiffler North, Todhunter Main and Todhunter South using a portable diamond drilling rig that allows early access to seasonally restricted project and drilling in steep/difficult terrain.
About 250 rock chip samples will also be taken to test areas for copper-gold mineralisation at major structural intersects in known prospective lithologies.
Subject to the results from Phase 1 drilling, Phase 2 will extend any mineralisation intersected as well as complete drilling at Chapman Flats, Catto West, Catto East, Chapman Flats North, Eiffler North, Todhunter North and Todhunter South.
Phase 2 will consist of 2,500 metres of shallow rotary air blast/reverse circulation drilling, 85 deeper targeted reverse circulation holes totalling 1,000 metres and between 5 and 10 diamond holes.
The company will also acquire 2,000 soil samples and 400 reconnaissance rock chip samples. These will be carried out in areas of known prospectivity and untested areas, especially south of Todhunter.
Phase 1 has been costed at $444,000 while Phase 2 will cost $1 million.
*Speewah Dome*
In the last quarter, shallow reverse circulation drilling was completed at Chapman Flats, Catto and Todhunter North, targeting earlier copper-gold surface discoveries with results peaking at 39% copper, 335g/t silver and 3.96g/t gold.
Drilling at the Catto prospect had identified narrow sub-parallel quartz veins containing anomalous gold though the primary target felsic granophyre-valentine siltstone contact was not fully tested.
Results from Todhunter North identified a dominance of lead mineralisation occurring over significant widths of the targeted structure.
*Analysis*
King River Copper’s drilling program will target both litho-structural targets, with copper, gold, silver mineralisation, and IOCG targets that are believed to explain the very high grade copper, gold, silver surface results at Speewah Dome.
The drilling will target these outcrops and is due to commence in May and is aimed at gaining an understanding of the more complex controls on the origin of the high grade results at the project.
