Backyard Farms partners with Cambridge’s Clover Food Lab to create exclusive New England lunch menu to raise money for The Greater Boston Food Bank.
Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 24, 2014
Backyard Farms, the largest New England greenhouse grower of fresh tomatoes, and Clover Food Lab are partnering to present “Summer in the City” to support The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). Boston’s lunch-goers will have an opportunity to enjoy a custom, tomato-inspired lunch menu specially designed by Clover Food Lab. All proceeds from each five-dollar lunch option will benefit GBFB.
The event will take place across from South Station in Boston’s Dewey Square on February 25 from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. In addition to proceeds raised at the event, Backyard Farms will donate $5,000 to GBFB.
“This winter has been especially burdensome for families in need,” said Catherine Spinelli, Director of Development, from GBFB. “Boston has endured multiple snow storms and frigid temperatures causing additional challenges such as increased home heating costs. This is perfect timing to give back to those who need it most in this great city. We’re excited to work with Backyard Farms for the first time and look forward to doing so in the future. We are deeply grateful that Backyard Farms cares about the one in nine residents of eastern Massachusetts who are food insecure.”
Backyard Farms will turn the cold Dewey Square into a summer oasis complete with turf, heat lamps, picnic tables and fresh tomatoes. One of Dewey Square’s favorite food trucks, Clover Food Lab, will serve up a signature “Maine sandwich” complete with a Backyard Farms beefsteak tomato, deep-fried seaweed (Ironbound Island Seaweed harvested off the coast of Maine), and a sriracha mayo with a side of tomato soup, made with Backyard Farms New England grown tomatoes. The new “Maine sandwich” will become a seasonal menu item for Clover in March. In addition to these signature dishes, cheddar and tomato sandwiches will also be available.
“Many food banks face post-holiday donation drive lulls,” explained Tim Cunniff, EVP Sales and Marketing, from Backyard Farms. “This is a time when food banks need even more help getting food into the homes of so many. We wanted to host an event that could help drive awareness and donations to support GBFB’s efforts. We also thought it would be fun to bring some summer warmth to Bostonians who have been experiencing a frigid, snowy winter.”
