Writers Guild Awards: ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Veep’ Win Series Awards (Updating Live)

In early awards handed out by the Writers Guild of America, “Breaking Bad” and “Veep” were named the best drama and comedy series of 2013, respectively.

The “Breaking Bad” episode “Confessions” and the “30 Rock” episode “Hogcock!” were named the year’s best episodes of a drama and comedy series.

Other awards include “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight” winning for long-form television adaptation, “The Simpsons” episode “A Test Before Trying” winning for TV animation and “Days of Our Lives” winning for daytime drama.

TheWrap will continue to update the awards as they are handed out at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Most of the early awards have been announced in New York before the categories have come up at the Los Angeles ceremony.

The WGA is the last of the four major guilds to announce its film awards, with the Producers Guild, Directors Guild and Screen Actors Guild already having held their ceremonies. Because the Writers Guild restricts eligibility to screenplays written under the terms of the guild’s minimum basic agreement, or under the jurisdiction of select international guilds, several of the Oscar screenplay nominees in the Best Adapted Screenplay category — including the presumed frontrunner, “12 Years a Slave” — were not eligible.

In the original-screenplay category, on the other hand, Academy and WGA voters nominated the same five films: “American Hustle,” “Blue Jasmine,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Her” and “Nebraska.”

A number of honorary awards were handed out by both the WGA, West and the WGA, East. Paul Mazursky was given the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, Garry Marshall the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, Alex Gibney the Paul Selvin Award, Thomas S. Cook the Morgan Cox Award and Sam Simon the Valentine Davies Award.

Winners are indicated by **WINNER*.
