The all-new Cigar Advisor Magazine is an online cigar magazine that brings a fresh, irreverent, and down-to-earth perspective on all things cigars to thousands of smokers. In addition to educational cigar content and behind-the-scenes cigar industry articles from some of the business’s top names, Cigar Advisor delivers an array of content about a variety of topics of interest to people who enjoy the cigar lifestyle. The magazine also features cigar reviews and ratings submitted by real smokers. Cigar Advisor Magazine has published a new article in its Cigars 101 section, entitled “How The Components of a Cigar Work Together". Cigar Advisor Executive Editor Gary Korb explains the three basic components of premium handmade cigars: the filler, binder, and wrapper.

Korb begins his article by noting that premium handmade cigars, "appear to be simply made, but are actually very complicated," and adds, "there are at least 300 steps, not to mention several years of aging that go into the making of each cigar." The rolling portion of the process may be one of the most important steps, but without properly aged and blended tobaccos, a cigar may be nothing more than sub-par.

Of the three leaf components, the leaves used primarily for blending are Seco, Viso and Ligero. Seco and Viso come from the middle portion of the plant, while Ligero, the leaf that gives a cigar its strength, comes from the top of the plant, where it also gets the most sunlight.

Korb also points out that the wrapper leaf is the most expensive. "Only so many leaves make it as wrappers, because the leaf must be virtually flawless; no tears, holes or other blemishes. The wrapper also plays a big role in the overall strength, character and flavor of the cigar."

Experienced cigar smokers are generally quite familiar with how premium cigars are made, so new cigar smokers should appreciate this brief column on cigar basics.
