Dr. Deutchman serves as Vice President of Mission Life International. It’s President, is Peter Morgan, DC who will also be part of the humanitarian mission.
Dr. Deutchman points out that in addition to providing chiropractic care for children and adults and food assistance, the group sponsors an orphanage to care for children whose parents perished in the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake. An estimated 350,000 people lost their lives and 1.5 million people were rendered homeless in an instant.
Dr. Deutchman will be leaving on the humanitarian mission next week and will devote considerable time healing and spending time with victims of double natural disasters. “Haiti endured the second-worst earthquake in history,” Dr. Deutchman explains. “It’s a place that has always been the underdog in the world. It’s an extremely impoverished place; they never get a break.”
Dr. Deutchman is helping to provide that much-needed break by offering everything from scoliosis treatments to patients, to helping to feed children, to rebuilding homes, schools and businesses. “We’re working to enlarge a school, and our orphanage,” he says, while treating the children who lost families in 2010 earthquake in Port au Prince. Dr. Deutchman explains that the 2010 earthquake could not have hit at a worse time; children had just been released from school and were on their way home when the earth began to shake. Thousands of adults who were in their homes or places of business were crushed by debris, leaving countless children without parents or caregivers. “There were three- four- and five-year old children walking around without anyone to care for them,” Dr. Deutchman says. “We started an orphanage virtually on the spot.” Mission Life Family Orphanage, Ounaminthe, opened its doors on March 3, 2010, less than two months after the earthquake struck. The organization has sponsored 25 trips to Haiti and the Dominican Republic since the January 2010 earthquake.
In addition to humanitarian aid, Dr. Deutchman and his colleagues from Mission Life International focus on helping Haitians who suffer from scoliosis and other conditions of the spine. “There is a lot of chiropractic care going on there,” he says. “We set up a free chiropractic office, outside, with 50 doctors. Thousands and thousands of people are getting free chiropractor care. Thousands of volunteers are helping to provide this free care and help.”
Dr. Deutchman is no stranger to altruism. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center, he worked every day for six months providing chiropractic services free of charge to relieve workers at the site. When the earthquake struck Haiti, he again pledged his services free of charge. “Once you see this, no matter who you are, you can’t walk away from it,” he shares. “These children depend on us to eat, for shelter. In essence we’ve adopted them. We’ve remotely adopted this group. But we’d like to do more. We need more donations.” One hundred percent of all funds raised by Mission Life International is earmarked for humanitarian aid in the form of food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care and disaster relief. Chiropractors and aid workers associated with the group pay their own way.
A Helping Hand in the Dominican Republic
After working in Haiti Dr. Deutchman and his team of chiropractors and aid workers will head to Puerto Plata on the northern coast in the Dominican Republic. There they will continue to provide chiropractic mission work. Mission Life International and Dr. Deutchman opened a full chiropractic office in Puerto Plata. The Chiropractic Annex is open to the public with a full-time chiropractor on staff.
