Earth is headed towards a major global disaster involving water resources, reports water and health researcher and advocate Sharon Kleyne, speaking in anticipation of World Water Monitoring Day on September 18th.
According to Kleyne, too many people still do not fully understand either the extent of the water problem or their potential contribution to the solution. Kleyne praises World Water Monitoring Day as a successful grass roots outreach program that is helping to avert the disaster and could save many lives. .

World Water Monitoring Day, sponsored by the World Water Monitoring Challenge, is observed annually on September 18. The goal of the WWMC is to educate local citizens worldwide about water problems and teach them how they personally can help. On World Water Monitoring Day, 2012, more than 250,000 participants in 66 countries tested local water quality and reported the results to the WWMC.
Water, says Kleyne, is basic to human health, economic growth, politics, environmental quality, air quality, climate and natural disasters, agriculture, transportation, commerce, nutrition and indeed, all life on Earth. According to Kleyne, 5,000 children die each day from diseases related to water and dehydration. Although far more attention is paid to growing water shortages and worsening water quality, Kleyne also believes that the natural humidity that infuses Earth’s atmosphere as water vapor, is now threatened.
Water vapor, Kleyne explains, is vital to oxygen transfer in the lungs and the body’s ability to absorb and retain water. Water vapor is also critical to the climatic cycles that produce rain and snow to recharge our rivers, lakes and ground water. Water vapor is the number one atmospheric greenhouse gas and is three to four times more abundant than carbon dioxide.
Certain human activities are significantly impacting the amount, quality, accessibility and benefit of the air’s water vapor/humidity. Polluted humidity, or widely reduced humidity levels significantly affect the body’s ability to beneficially absorb water from the air. Polluted or reduced humidity could also cause as yet unknown changes to global hydrological cycles. In polluted humidity, vapor droplets, instead of forming freely, form around suspended and sometimes harmful pollution particles such as carbon black.
A comprehensive solution, says Kleyne, would require that water resources become the top priority of every government, politician, physician, public health worker, planner, environmentalist, climatologists, business executive, teacher, journalist, parent and human in every community and country in the world.
