Ocean microbes team up brilliantly to gather food when it's scarce Woods Hole MA (SPX) Jul 20, 2021

What's a hungry marine microbe to do when the pickings are slim? It must capture nutrients - nitrogen, phosphorus, or iron - to survive, yet in vast expanses of the ocean, nutrients are extremely scarce. And the stakes are high: Marine microbial communities drive many of the elemental cycles that sustain all life on Earth. One ingenious solution to this challenge is reported this week in P

Twitter suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene again, this time over misleading vaccine tweets

$
0
0
Congress' loudest Facebook aunt, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, has landed herself her second Twitter suspension of the year for tweeting false or misleading information about COVID-19 vaccinations.

Greene posted two quote tweets on July 18 and 19, adding her own claims that vaccines that protect against serious illness and death from COVID-19 are "controversial" and "NON-FDA approved", calling them "human experimentation" and asserting that COVID-19 is "not dangerous for non-obese people and those under 65."

Vaccines available in the U.S. have been authorized for emergency use by the Food and Drug Authority, and are safe and effective. COVID-19 has caused serious short- and long-term illness and death in people of all ages around the world, including over 110,000 Americans under the age of 65 who have died to date.

Both Greene's tweets remain available on her account, but have had Twitter's anti-misinformation fact checking labels applied to them, marking them as "misleading" and linking to more reliable information on vaccine safety.

Twitter put Greene's account into "read-only mode" for a period of 12 hours for violating the platform's policy on misleading COVID-19 information. This is a form of enforcement action where the account is limited to seeing tweets on their timeline and sending direct messages to people who follow them, and cannot tweet, retweet, or like tweets.

Misleading information on COVID-19, a Twitter spokesperson noted in an email to Mashable, includes "research findings (such as misrepresentations of or unsubstantiated conclusions about statistical data) used to advance a specific narrative that diminishes the significance of the disease."

Greene was previously suspended for 12 hours in January of this year for sharing false or misleading information about the 2020 U.S. election, aka "multiple violations of [Twitter's] civic integrity policy". Under Twitter's strike-based system, suspensions of this length are the standard enforcement action for second and third strikes — meaning that next time Greene crosses the line, she's facing a 7-day account lock, and a permanent suspension for any strikes after that.

Greene has made a habit of making false, misleading, and incendiary claims in her six months in the House. In addition to her continued support for the "Big Lie" that President Joe Biden's win over Donald Trump in the November election was illegitimate, she has also compared mask requirements on Capitol Hill to the Holocaust and suggested that California's increasingly intense wildfires are ignited by laser beams from solar generators orbiting Earth.

Greene's home state of Georgia, like all 50 U.S. states, is currently facing a new wave of rising case numbers thanks to the highly transmissible Delta variant, with the Peach State clocking a 291 percent increase in new cases in the two weeks to July 19. Less than half of the state's adults are fully vaccinated.

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos is set to be carried into space later today in the first passenger flight of his Blue Origin rocket company. Blue Origin's reusable New Shepard space rocket will carry humans on board for the first time when it blasts off at 8am CDT (2pm BST). Interested followers will be able to follow Blue Origin's livestream video of the launch from 6.30am CDT. As revealed in recent weeks, billionaire Bezos will be accompanied by his younger brother Mark and two other debutant astronauts, 82-year-old Wally Funk and 18-year-old Oliver Daemen. Funk trained as one of the Mercury 13 astronauts in the 1960s but never got a chance to fly into space. Physics student Daemen will be the space tourism business's first paying customer, with his ticket paid for by his dad, who is the founder and CEO of Dutch private equity firm Somerset Capital Partners (not to be confused with Jacob Rees-Mogg's Somerset Capital Management). Funk and Daemen will be the oldest and youngest astronauts ever to travel to space. Our astronauts have completed training and are a go for launch. #NSFirstHumanFlight pic.twitter.com/rzkQgqVaB6 — Blue Origin (@blueorigin) July 19, 2021 After lift-off the rocket will, as Blue Origin has been at pains to point out, blast to an altitude of around 62 miles (100km) above the Earth, a level known as the Kármán line. Bezos's billionaire space-race rival Sir Richard Branson's spaceflight on his Virgin Galactic spaceship earlier this month reached a height of 53 miles, which is outside the Earth's atmosphere and is accepted by NASA as being where outer space begins. But Blue Origin has pointed out that not only is the Kármán line the stated boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and outer space as set by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, and where “96 percent of the world's population” recognises as being the borderline, while also boasting that its rocket has bigger windows than its rival. After four minutes of weightless fun for the passengers, New Shepard, on what is its 16th flight, will return to Earth with its descent slowed by parachutes and aiming for a touchdown in the West Texas desert.

Mr. Peterson will focus on deployment and commercialization of the Rare Earth division's processing, isolation and purification technology suite, as well as broadening the supply of certain critical and rare earth element feedstocks.

Mark Jensen, CEO of American Resources Corporation commented, "As we continue to execute on our American Rare Earth business plan, we are encouraged by the opportunities that we are seeing to create and foster a sustainable supply chain of rare earth and critical minerals. We strongly believe that blending such a supply chain with our innovative, process-chain technologies will create the most environmentally safe sources of these important materials ever developed. As the electrification movement continues to accelerate, we feel it is exceedingly important to complement that movement with an efficient and environmentally safe circular lifecycle of raw materials. The addition of Jeff to our team, with his experiences and proven track record, will assist us in achieving these goals more effectively."

Mr. Peterson brings nearly 20 years of experience including operations, engineering, sales, and product development to American Resources. He began his career as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy serving onboard nuclear-powered submarines. After resigning his Commission, Jeff joined Westinghouse Electric Company where he served as part of the engineering and licensing team in the design and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved licensing of a first-of-its-kind Generation III+ pressurized water reactor for commercial electricity generation. Mr. Peterson then joined Cyient where he was rapidly promoted to sales, strategy, and product development leadership roles. He most recently worked with Hitachi Vantara as part of the North American sales team, selling digital transformation initiatives into key industrial markets.

Mr. Peterson added, "It's very exciting to be joining the American Resources team at this point in the Company's evolution. They have shown their ability to innovate their business lines to meet the demand of the rapidly changing infrastructure markets and to solve problems that have been facing the carbon industry while also addressing those facing the critical and rare earth domestic supply chain and marketplace. We have a tremendous opportunity to not only fill the demand for those raw materials but to also bring them to the market in the most sustainable and environmentally conscious of ways."

American Resources continues to focus on running efficient streamlined operations in being a new-aged supplier of raw materials to the infrastructure and electrification marketplace in the most sustainable of ways. By operating with low or no legacy costs and having one of the largest and most innovative growth pipelines in the industry, American Resources Corporation works to maximize value for its investors by positioning its large asset base to best fit a new-aged economy, while being able to scale its operations to meet the growth of the markets it serves.

2 Decades Later, Dennis Tito Reflects On Historic Spaceflight

2 Decades Later, Dennis Tito Reflects On Historic Spaceflight Watch Video“It was the most euphoric period of my life. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

American businessman Dennis Tito became the world’s first space tourist on April 28, 2001, when he launched to the International Space Station on a Russian rocket.

It was a lifelong dream come true for the space enthusiast, who had once worked as an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Tito: “I made a life goal that I would go to space as soon as it was commercially available. And I waited and waited and waited for 40 years and nothing was happening as far as availability of commercial opportunities.”

NASA wasn’t willing to send private citizens into space after the Challenger explosion in 1986, so Tito turned to Russia, which was in need of money after the Cold War.

Tito: “It wasn’t just a matter of having the financial resources to make it happen. It was a matter that I was willing to train hard and work hard.”

Russia ultimately agreed — to the tune of $20 million. And Tito spent eight months training outside Moscow for his historic flight.

Tito: "We had a lot of classroom training, language training, which I zeroed out on, totally flunked that. But that was not fun at all. But there was physical training and various spinning chairs and weightlessness flights."

In total, Tito spent eight days on the ISS -- orbiting Earth 128 times.

Tito: “I had my favorite porthole that I would look at and it looked down at the Earth, so I took a lot of pictures of the Earth. …  One of the Russian cosmonauts really liked to sing – really good singer, liked to sing Beatles songs. So we were just dancing in space.”

Six other space tourists have since flown into orbit. And now companies like Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic and SpaceX are banking on commercial spaceflights being the next big thing.

But Tito doesn’t like to focus on the fact that he pioneered space tourism as we know it today.

“The only reason I was the first is probably because I felt I was running out of time at age 60. And I better make it happen, not because, well, I want to be the first. ... My goal was to really experience being in space and ... it was the greatest eight days of my life.”

Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos made it to space on Tuesday. And back.

Bezos and a small group of fellow travelers, including his brother Mark, 82-year-old aviator Wally Funk, and 18-year-old Oliver Daemen, completed Blue Origin's first crewed flight to space. Funk became the oldest person to travel to space, and Daemen became the youngest.

A New Shepard rocket from Bezos' Blue Origin lifted off from the desert in Van Horn, Texas, at 8:11 a.m. CT, blazing up more than 62 miles through clear blue skies. Toward the peak of the flight, the dome-like cabin carrying the crew detached from the rocket booster as planned, hovering above the Earth.

The scene inside the cabin was not shown during the livestream, but viewers could hear the audio inside as the astronauts cheered, marveled at the views, and shared some Skittles in zero gravity.

The reusable rocket booster made it back to the ground with a controlled, soft landing while the cabin floated down to the ground with a trio of huge parachutes. In all, the trip took just over 10 minutes.

"That was incredible!" exclaimed Jeff Bezos from the cabin after landing.

With a mild morning in West Texas, only a short delay, and no noted mechanical issues, the launch went about as perfectly as it could have.

Blue Origin and Bezos's spaceflight came a little over a week after Virgin Galactic's first fully crewed SpaceShipTwo flight, which similarly featured its billionaire founder, Richard Branson.

Originally, the Blue Origin flight was supposed to include the buyer of a $28 million ticket sold at auction. The wealthy buyer was replaced by Daemen, Blue Origin announced on Thursday, citing "scheduling conflicts"— despite the fact that the July 20 launch date had been set for months. The mysterious auction winner still has not been revealed, and will fly on a future trip.

For Funk, the trip to space came 60 years after she passed the rigorous physical and mental tests designed for NASA astronauts held through the unofficial Women in Space Program. Women were not admitted into NASA's astronauts program until the late '70s, but Funk was still not permitted because she didn't have an engineering degree or test pilot experience. Funk is still a legendary aviator, logging 19,600 flying hours over her career. Now she can start tallying up how much time she's spent in space.

Blue Origin stated that there will be two more flights in 2021. The company has not revealed any specifics like dates or crew lists, nor has it revealed the regular ticket price for its New Shepard trips.

American Resources Corporation (NASDAQ:AREC) said it has appointed ‘seasoned executive’ Jeff Peterson as a senior member to the company's American Rare Earth division. In his role, Peterson will focus on the deployment and commercialization of American Resources’ Rare Earth division's processing, isolation and purification technology suite, as well as broadening the supply of certain critical and rare earth element feedstocks. With nearly 20 years of experience in operations, engineering, sales, and product development, Peterson began his career as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Navy serving onboard nuclear-powered submarines. READ: American Resources grows supply chain for waste permanent magnets and lithium-ion batteries to be recycled for rare earth minerals  After leaving the Navy, Peterson went on to join Westinghouse Electric Company where he served as part of the engineering and licensing team in the design of a first-of-its-kind Generation III+ pressurized water reactor for commercial electricity generation. From there, he joined Cyient where he was rapidly promoted to sales, strategy, and product development leadership roles. "As we continue to execute on our American Rare Earth business plan, we are encouraged by the opportunities that we are seeing to create and foster a sustainable supply chain of rare earth and critical minerals. We strongly believe that blending such a supply chain with our innovative, process-chain technologies will create the most environmentally safe sources of these important materials ever developed,” Mark Jensen, CEO of American Resources Corporation said in a statement.  “As the electrification movement continues to accelerate, we feel it is exceedingly important to complement that movement with an efficient and environmentally safe circular lifecycle of raw materials. The addition of Jeff to our team, with his experiences and proven track record, will assist us in achieving these goals more effectively." American Resources is focused on running efficient streamlined operations while also being a new-aged supplier of raw materials to the infrastructure and electrification marketplace. "It's very exciting to be joining the American Resources team at this point in the company's evolution,” Peterson commented. He continued: “They have shown their ability to innovate their business lines to meet the demand of the rapidly changing infrastructure markets and to solve problems that have been facing the carbon industry while also addressing those facing the critical and rare earth domestic supply chain and marketplace. We have a tremendous opportunity to not only fill the demand for those raw materials but to also bring them to the market in the most sustainable and environmentally conscious ways." Researchers Capture Image Of Heart Of Closest Radio Galaxy

Researchers Capture Image Of Heart Of Closest Radio Galaxy An international astronomy team that the University of Valencia is part of, has just published in Nature Astronomy the image of the heart of the Centaurus A galaxy in the finest detail ever. The work specifies the exact point where the supermassive black hole of this galaxy is located and allows us to observe how a gigantic jet of matter escaping from the black hole at speeds very close to that of light is originated. The image challenges current models of the origin of jets in black holes.

The matter jet image published now in a study led by Michael Janssen (Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Bonn, Germany), challenges current models that try to explain the origin of relativistic jets in black holes.

The Centaur Galaxy (Centaurus A) is one of the most intense radio sources in the sky and its emission has been studied extensively across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to the most energetic gamma radiation. At the heart of Centaurus A there is a black hole with a mass equivalent to 55 million suns, halfway between the black hole of the M87 galaxy (of which the EHT obtained the famous image, with a mass of more than six billion suns) and the black hole in the centre of our galaxy (with only four million solar masses).

In this work, EHT observations –taken during the year 2017 – have been used to obtain an image of the Centaurus A black hole with an unprecedented level of detail.

Two male astronomers and a female astronomer from the University of Valencia are part of this international research team based on the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration, known for having obtained the first image of a black hole. They are Rebecca Azulay, who performed support astronomer tasks at Pico Veleta – the only European radio telescope that participated in the observations –; Iván Martí-Vidal –CIDEGENT researcher at the University of Valencia, who designed and applied the calibration algorithms for the most sensitive part of the EHT–; and Alejandro Mus –researcher in training, whose work focuses on the development of algorithms that will help reconstruct dynamic images of our Galactic Centre.

“These results allow us to see, for the first time, how matter is structured around this supermassive black hole with a level of detail of just over 20 light-hours. This allows us to contemplate the processes that give rise to the birth of the mysterious relativistic jets, which are found in many of the most massive black holes in the Universe”, says astronomer Michael Janssen, lead author of the work.

“We have obtained an image of Centaurus A with a resolution more than 15 times higher than the highest ever obtained in observations of this source. This formidable image is allowing us to study the structure of the black hole jet, from the smallest scales – the apparent size of a golf ball on the Moon, as seen from Earth – to the largest scales – an apparent size similar to the size of the Moon itself. The amount of information that we now have is overwhelming”, highlights Iván Martí-Vidal.

**Understanding relativistic jets**

Supermassive black holes, like the one that resides in the heart of Centaurus A, feed on the gas and dust around them, drawing it into their deep gravitational well. This process, called ‘accretion’, releases huge amounts of energy, much of which is emitted into outer space, resulting in what we know as ‘active galaxies’. While most of the accreted matter is engulfed by the black hole, a small fraction of that matter can escape and form so-called ‘relativistic jets’, one of the most mysterious phenomena in modern astrophysics.

Today, science has different models to explain the acceleration and propagation of matter in relativistic jets. However, very little is still known about the origin of these jets and how they can spread to cover distances much greater than the size of their entire host galaxy. “These EHT observations will help us find the answer to some of these fundamental questions”, says Alejandro Mus. “The new EHT image shows that Centaurus A’s jet is brighter at its outermost part, compared to the brilliance of its spine, that is how its central part is called. This is the first time that we have seen this phenomenon so pronounced in a relativistic jet”, adds Mus. “The results allow us to rule out several theoretical models of jet formation, which are unable to reproduce the enormous contrast observed between the ends and the spine of the jet”, says Matthias Kadler, from the University of Würzburg and co-author of the work.

**Future projects**

Thanks to these observations of Centaurus A, it has been possible to locate the supermassive black hole with great precision, identifying it with the point where the relativistic jet is born. Based on these results, the team of astronomers plans future observations at even higher radio frequencies, which will make it possible to obtain images that are even sharper than those published now. The team also does not rule out that, in the future, in the longer term, images of the shadow of this black hole may be obtained, incorporating orbiting telescopes into the EHT network.

Researchers invented a new touchscreen material so we never run out Have you ever imagined your smartphone or tablet without a touchscreen? This could soon be the case if we run out of indium, one of the rarest minerals on Earth. Indium is used in many high-tech devices such as touch screens, smartphones, solar panels, and smart windows, in the form of indium tin oxide. This compound is optically transparent and electrically conductive — the two crucial features required for touch screens to work. But there’s a problem: we have no guaranteed long-term supply of indium. It is naturally found only in tiny traces and is therefore impractical to mine directly.…
