Leading Edge Materials Corp (CVE:LEM) updated on the status of its Norra Karr heavy REE (rare earth element) deposit in Sweden, saying the lease on the site was now under 'application' rather than 'granted'. It comes after a Swedish governmental review of the Supreme Administrative Court's interpretation of the Swedish Mining Act, which has led to the mining inspectorate requesting supplementary information, which the firm has done. LEM said it continued to hold exclusive rights to the Norra Karr project throughout this mining lease application process. "We continue to work through this mining lease application process with the Swedish authorities and look forward to finalizing it," said Blair Way, the president and chief executive at Leading Edge. Norra Karr can potentially supply numerous innovation-critical metals and minerals, for which the European Union is currently import dependent. We look forward to continuing our research to add value to this large and strategic project." LEM shares fell 7.14% to C$0.65. Reported by Proactive Investors 2 hours ago.

RS-25 Engine Throttles Up for Deep Space Exploration

STENNIS SPACE CENTER, Miss., Feb. 21, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With an eye toward future deep space missions, Aerojet Rocketdyne and NASA today powered up the RS-25 main engine for the agency’s powerful heavy-lift Space Launch System (SLS) to its highest thrust levels yet.During today’s 260-second hot fire test, the RS-25 engine throttled up to 113 percent of its original design thrust level. The first four flights of SLS will use engines that max out at 109 percent of rated thrust (these same engines operated at 104.5 percent rated thrust when flown on the Space Shuttle). New RS-25 engines developed under Aerojet Rocketdyne’s restart program will baseline their thrust at 111 percent.“Increased thrust requirements for the RS-25 are just one of the many changes in the SLS rocket’s performance that will facilitate our nation’s deep space exploration goals and objectives,” said Dan Adamski, RS-25 program director at Aerojet Rocketdyne. “While we can analytically calculate engine performance and structural capabilities at these higher power levels, actually demonstrating that performance with an engine hot fire provides the added confidence that these engines will meet all specification requirements demanded of SLS.”The RS-25 is an updated version of the Space Shuttle Main Engine that helped power the Space Shuttle into space. There are 16 flight engines that will power the first four SLS flights in inventory at Aerojet Rocketdyne's Stennis facility. Fourteen of the engines previously flew aboard the Space Shuttle. The SLS rocket was designed for missions beyond low-Earth orbit carrying crew or cargo to the Moon or beyond. The initial configuration for what SLS can carry past low-Earth orbit and on to the Moon is more than 26 metric tons, with a final configuration of at least 45 metric tons. All SLS configurations are powered by four RS-25 engines attached to the 212-foot-tall core stage, the backbone of the rocket being built at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans.“One of the key features of SLS is its versatility to support human and robotic missions, launching spacecraft, habitats and astronauts to a variety of deep space destinations," said Eileen Drake, CEO and president of Aerojet Rocketdyne. “The lifting power of the SLS will permit NASA to get bigger payloads to distant planets more quickly than any other launcher operating today.”The latest RS-25 hot fire test also was the fourth involving an additively manufactured Pogo Accumulator Assembly. The assembly is the largest 3-D printed RS-25 component tested to date. Newly manufactured RS-25 engines, to be used starting with the fifth SLS mission, will incorporate the additively manufactured Pogo Accumulator Assembly and other 3-D printed parts currently in development. This effort is one of many focused on making the engine more affordable for future missions. The first SLS mission is scheduled for fiscal year 2020, when the rocket will blast off carrying an uncrewed version of NASA’s Orion spacecraft on a mission beyond the Moon farther than any human-rated space vehicle has ever traveled. The SLS-Orion combo is scheduled to fly a similar mission profile in the early 2020s, only this time with an astronaut crew on board.Aerojet Rocketdyne, a subsidiary of Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings, Inc. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence and his new space advisory council want U.S. private companies moving faster and farther into the cosmos, with the government easing restrictions on these 21st century pioneers. The U.S. will get left behind, the National Space Council was warned Wednesday, if it doesn't make it easier for companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin to set up shop in orbit around Earth and aim for the moon, Mars and beyond. "Somewhere out there in space, is a bright red Roadster going thousands of miles per hour, the fastest car in history. We had better keep up with it," said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross Jr., a member of the newly revived space council. Reported by SeattlePI.com 56 minutes ago.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. (AP) — A SpaceX rocket carrying a Spanish satellite has blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The Falcon 9 lifted off at 6:17 a.m. Thursday and climbed into the dawn sky over the Pacific Ocean west of Los Angeles. The launch has been anticipated in Southern California because of the potential for wide visibility. However, conditions are partly cloudy across the region. Spain's PAZ satellite carries an instrument to make radar images of the Earth for government and commercial purposes. A secondary payload consists of two small test satellites for a system that would provide internet access to remote areas. Reported by SeattlePI.com 8 hours ago.

Brendan Fraser Blames Career Woes in Part on 2003 Groping Accusation Against Former HFPA President

Brendan Fraser Blames Career Woes in Part on 2003 Groping Accusation Against Former HFPA President Brendan Fraser knows his career nowadays isn’t what it used to be — and he believes some of the blame stems from a groping incident involving former Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk that he reported nearly 15 years before the #MeToo movement emerged to support accusers.

In a new GQ article, Fraser remembers a 2003 incident that Berk himself recounted in his memoir and that was reported by TheWrap founder Sharon Waxman, who at the time worked for The New York Times. Although Berk said he “pinched” Fraser’s butt, the actor himself says it was more than that.

“His left hand reaches around, grabs my a– cheek, and one of his fingers touches me in the taint. And he starts moving it around,” Fraser told GQ. When he was finally able to remove Berk’s hand, he added, “I felt ill. I felt like a little kid. I felt like there was a ball in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.”

The “Mummy” star said he rushed out of the room, past a police officer whom he couldn’t get himself to confess to and ran home to tell his then-wife about the incident. According to GQ, Berk, who is still an HFPA member, disputed Fraser’s account and called it a “total fabrication.”

The HFPA, best known for overseeing the annual Golden Globes Awards, has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Although he thought about going public with the story, Fraser explained, he decided he didn’t “want to contend with how that made me feel, or it becoming part of my narrative.” But the memory stayed with him, and he asked the HFPA for a written apology, and according to him, the HFPA said Berk would never be allowed in a room with Fraser again. Berk denied that to GQ.

“I became depressed,” he said. “I was blaming myself and I was miserable — because I was saying, ‘This is nothing; this guy reached around and he copped a feel.’ That summer wore on — and I can’t remember what I went on to work on next.”

He added that the experience “made me retreat. It made me feel reclusive,” and he wondered whether the HFPA blacklisted him afterward.

“I don’t know if this curried disfavor with the group, with the HFPA,” he said. “But the silence was deafening.” Berk told GQ the HFPA did not retaliate against Fraser and that his career declined “through no fault of ours.”

But Fraser said work “withered on the vine for me. In my mind, at least, something had been taken away from me.” The actor said medical and marital issues, as well as the death of his mother in 2016, also contributed to the decline of his career.

He added, “Am I still frightened? Absolutely. Do I feel like I need to say something? Absolutely. Have I wanted to many, many times? Absolutely. Have I stopped myself? Absolutely. And maybe I am over-reacting in terms of what the instance was. I just know what my truth is. And it’s what I just spoke to you.”

Fraser most recently starred in 2014’s “The Nut Job” and will next star in the TV series “Condor” and “Trust.” He also has “The Field” and “Behind the Curtain of the Night” lined up this year. His biggest hits include “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” “George of the Jungle,” and “The Mummy” franchise.

SpaceX tried to catch its rocket nose cone with a giant net — and just missed

SpaceX tried to catch its rocket nose cone with a giant net — and just missed After launching its Falcon 9 rocket from California this morning, SpaceX used a giant net to try to recover the rocket’s nose cone as it fell down in the Pacific Ocean. The first-time experiment failed, however: one of the pieces of the nose cone missed the net, which was attached to a ship, and landed intact on the sea surface instead.

Also known as the payload fairing, the nose cone is an earplug-shaped casing that sits on the top of the rocket, shielding the vehicle’s payload during launch. Once in space, the fairing breaks apart into two pieces and falls back to Earth. Normally, companies don’t recover the pieces of the fairing after a launch, but SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has been eager to find a way to save the hardware. “Imagine you... Elon Musk just shared the first images of new SpaceX satellites that could change the internet

Elon Musk just shared the first images of new SpaceX satellites that could change the internet· *SpaceX launched two experimental satellites on Thursday.*
· *The satellites are designed to test Starlink, a concept to bathe all of Earth in high-speed broadband internet using a fleet of 12,000 satellites.*
· *Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, posted a video of the new satellites deploying into orbit.*
· *Musk named the satellites "Tintin A" and "Tintin B."*

--------------------The first pieces of a radical plan to bathe Earth with high-speed internet access just launched into space.

SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Elon Musk, piggybacked two experimental spacecraft onto a rocket that deployed a Spanish radar satellite into orbit.

Officially known as Microsat-2a and Microsat-2b, the spacecraft will test technologies that would enable the creation of a pervasive broadband network with connection speeds roughly 180 times the global average.

"Today's Falcon launch carries 2 SpaceX test satellites for global broadband," Musk tweeted on Wednesday (before a launch delay). "If successful, Starlink constellation will serve least served."

The scale of plans for the space-based network, known as Starlink, boggles the mind. In the coming years, SpaceX may launch 4,425 Starlink satellites into orbit some 700 to 800 miles above Earth, plus another 7,500 similar spacecraft into lower orbits.

That's nearly 12,000 satellites — more than twice the number of all satellites launched in history, according to a count by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

If the project is successful, people around the world would get internet that's about 40 times faster than current satellite internet providers, even in incredibly remote and rural areas.

SpaceX and Musk released the first-ever public images and video of the satellites shortly after their launch on Thursday.

*The first images of Starlink satellites*

The Spanish satellite, called Paz, deployed about 11 minutes after the Falcon 9 rocket launched, followed by Microsat-2a and Microsat-2b some time after that.

A live webcast of the Paz mission launch on YouTube offered the first-ever (though somewhat fuzzy) glimpses of the two Starlink satellites (above).

An announcer said during SpaceX's live webcast that the company couldn't show the deployment of the Starlink demonstration satellites because of poor signal coverage. However, the rocket later beamed down high-resolution video of the satellites deploying.

"First two Starlink demo satellites, called Tintin A & B, deployed and communicating to Earth stations," Musk tweeted with a clip of them floating out into space.Musk later said the two satellites "will attempt to beam 'hello world'" on Friday when they pass over Los Angeles — a critical moment that would show the spacecraft can talk to ground stations.

"Don't tell anyone, but the wifi password is 'martians,'" Musk joked.

The list of Starlink test ground stations, according to Federal Communications Commission documentation released earlier this month, includes the offices of Musk's electric-car company, Tesla, which sells internet-connected vehicles. Here's the full list:

· SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.
· Tesla Motors headquarters in Fremont, California.
· SpaceX test center in McGregor, Texas.
· SpaceX in Brownsville, Texas.
· SpaceX in Redmond, Washington.
· SpaceX in Brewster, Washington.
· Three mobile "test vans."

In November, the FCC gave SpaceX permission to launch the two spacecraft and test its space-based internet concept.

*How Starlink customers would get online*

Musk and SpaceX have said little about their plan since announcing it in 2015, but the full, nearly 12,000-satellite fleet ultimately needs approval from the FCC, which regulates internet access.

It may seem like an absurd task to launch thousands of satellites, but SpaceX regularly deploys 10 at a time with its reusable Falcon 9 rocket system.

The company has also successfully test-launched its Falcon Heavy system, an even larger reusable rocket that can send twice as much payload into low-Earth orbit as the next-largest launcher on the market — at perhaps one-fourth the cost.

Thus, it's feasible that Falcon Heavy could deploy dozens of Starlink satellites in a single launch.

Musk hopes to get Starlink in an operational (though not complete) state sometime around 2024, according to Florida Today, and start selling access around that time.

Musk and SpaceX have not yet said what the monthly cost of the service might be. However, Musk said in 2015 that user terminals should be laptop-size and cost between $100-$300 each.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists tag sharks to see where they roam in the high seas, but until now they couldn't track the seas' biggest eater: Humans. By using ships' own emergency beacons, researchers got the first comprehensive snapshot of industrial fishing's impacts around the globe. And it's huge — bigger than scientists thought, according to a new study. Large-scale commercial fishing covers more than 55 percent of the oceans with the world's fishing fleet traveling more than 285 million miles (460 million kilometers) a year — three times the distance between Earth and the sun, according to research in Thursday's journal Science .
